We will protect our employees' freedom of speech (in Hong Kong office)."
One of the things that comes with freedom of expression often is, hmmm, very difficult conversations, in any society, that comes with that sort of engagement. I think nobody's ever suggested that when somebody exercises those rights, that means that people would say 'ah-ha, now I agree' or that everything would be friendly."
Sports often serve that purpose that takes people who might not otherwise pay attention to issues in society and sports shine a light on them." Sports has the power to change the world?
"Essentially, what I have said in that statement is the long-held values of the NBA are to support the freedom of expression, and certainly the freedom of expression by members of the NBA communities, and in this case Daryl Morey, the general manager of the Houston Rockets, enjoys that right as one of our employees. What I also try to suggest is I understand there are consequences from that exercise of essence of freedom of speech. And we would have to live with those consequences...... as a league, we are not willing to compromise those values. I don't think it's inconsistent on one hand to be sympathetic to them (fans and partners in China) and at the same time stand by our principles"
"At the end of the day, I am an American and there are these values that are deeply rooted in the DNA of the NBA and that includes the freedom of expression for our employees, and I am hoping that together Yao Ming and I can find an accommodation but hmmm, he, eh, is extremely hot (ha) at the moment and I understand it."
"I want to be clear and I think there has been some confusion around.... around this. We..... are not apologising for Daryl's exercising his freedom of expression. I regret again having communicated directly with many friends in China that so many people are upset including millions and millions of our fans. At the end of the day, we.... we come with basketball as an opportunity to sell dreams, sell hopes and for people to focus on physical fitness, mental health and to an extent that we are (now) causing disruptions in people's lives and that we are causing disharmony, hm, that's something I regret. As I said earlier, I don't think it's inconsistent to both be apologetic that that was the outcome of that speech but the same time support Daryl's right to his freedom of expression."
